About

Gino Castellanos is a Cuban-American  printmaker and graphic designer who obtained his bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from Florida Atlantic University in 2020. He’s currently a freelance designer and artist based in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he attends UTK as an MFA candidate for Studio Art.

Gino’s first 16 years of life were spent on the island of Cuba, where he was raised and lived in a different culture. When arriving in America in 2011, he understood that the only way forward was with diligence and discipline, which he used to focus on his education and career. From living in Cuba, Florida, and now Knoxville, TN, he has seen and experience widely different cultures and living conditions, and met a diverse number of people that continue to inspire him. In the four years that he has been an artist Gino has been in over 20 group and selected exhibitions around the U.S and has been engaged with his community as well as other academic institutions. He’s expected to receive his MFA in Studio Art with concentration in Printmaking in 2024.

artist statement

As a contemporary artist, I’ve made it my purpose to use my own experiences and extensive research to create a body of work that investigates archetypal ideas rooted on Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious. I use symbology and cultural imagery that can be universal and relatable in an attempt to bolster a relationship between our current self and our ancestral self with the hope that somewhere in the middle we can find answers to some of the complexities of the human mind. The work that I make stems from the experiences I’ve had as an immigrant. My memories and identity serve as fuel for the art, but the art itself is universal, since its intention is to unify and to bring attention to the self and the spiritual side of all. Therefore, it is important that the work is not merely about myself, but about the human condition.

As an immigrant that lived the first 16 years of his life in the island of Cuba, and someone who has been living in America for another 11 years, I possess a strong mix of cultures that guide my pencil with every piece that I make. By using the fundamental structure already mentioned, as well as my own cultural identity, I explore diverse themes and often work in series, using various styles and disciplines depending on the visual investigation I’m undertaking.

For me, Printmaking is the optimal way of creating art. I love the power of multiplicity and allowing my work to be seen, owned and shared by multiple individuals at the same time and in different places. The myriad of different processes and techniques that printmaking allows makes it possible for my message to take multiple forms and look very different each time I decide to change my style while still retaining the multiple power. That flexibility allows me to expand my research and the graphic style of my message, and gives me near-infinite communication possibilities.

I predominantly use relief printmaking, taking strong inspiration from Mexican Printmakers’ graphic aesthetic and German expressionism. I also use intaglio, monotype, lithography, and screenprint as preferred mediums, as well as occasionally dabbling in digital illustration, drawing, painting, and sculpture.
