Anger is commonly thought of as a negative emotion. We are supposed to suppress it, avoid it, control it. It is not usually acceptable to lash out and yell at others, or become violent and destructive when provoked. However, it is undeniable that Anger is a crucial emotion that we need in order to survive. Anger is what allow us to fight back against abuse, tyranny, injustice, and most things that desire to take us down or take away what belongs to us. Without pure anger, there’s no desire to defend what it’s important to us. We could see our mother being beaten on the street by thugs, without feeling a desire to fight for her and defend her to the death. We would just feel sad and cry, or scared and run. Anger is born as a precursor to defend yourself. Either psychologically, or at times, with violence. Anger is meant to offer you the energy you need to fight. You sweat, and your breathing and heart rate increase to maximize speed. Your digestive system slows down to conserve energy, your blood vessels dilate to send blood to your limbs and facilitate movement and increase power, this is why you get red in the face. It’s all for the purpose of facing your opponents, your tyrants.

So, maybe count to 10 if you experience road rage, but definitely allow yourself to feel anger when someone or something conspires against you or your community.
